Avatar Director James Cameron and Actress Sigourney Weaver were in São Paulo on Sunday to plant the first tree as part of a global partnership to plant one million trees worldwide.

Cameron planted the pau-brasil – a native Brazilian tree – which is a powerful symbol of recuperation of the forests in that country and a species that is 99% extinct. The tree was planted in Ibirapuera Park, the most important and famous park in the city of São Paulo.

Cameron and Weaver were joined by prominent Brazilian officials, including Antonio Herman Benjamin, Justice of the High Court of Brazil and INECE EPC Co-Chair.  Justice Benjamin, Cameron, and Weaver toured Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, which is designated as a World Biosphere Reserve. Justice Benjamin emphasized the importance of compliance and enforcement in protecting this unique biodiversity hotspot, which is home to more than 2,200 species of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians — including nearly 200 bird species found nowhere else, and more than 20,000 species of plants.
